DESCRIPTION

A doctoral studies course, intended for everyone that would like to learn how to use social media for research purposes, as well as for distribution and popularization of their scientific work and findings. The course would be in the form of practical advice and it will provide know-how that can directly be applied and put in practice in real-life examples. Every class would be recorded and then made available in video format. The video classes will be available to PhD students who have an interest in the topic discussed in the class and who aren’t able to attend the class in real time.

At the end of the course, every participating PhD student will have obtained practical knowledge on how to best use YouTube, LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram and Twitter in order to do research and later promote and popularize their scientific work. They would also gain general social media skills, tips on how to find partners for future scientific projects, tools to help them communicate their work more effectively with society and decision making people.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Knowledge
After completion of the course, the candidate:

  • Will have useful knowledge on communicating science
  • Will know the fundamentals of social media and how to use it for communicating science
  • Will know the practices for best use of different web instruments for research purposes
  • Will know the importance of video content for communicating science
  • Will have a good understanding of popularizing scientific work from European projects

Skills
After completion of the course, the candidate:

  • Will have mastered presentation skills
  • Will be able to create websites for popularizing science and scientific projects
  • Will know how to use a phone and other devices to document and showcase photo and video footage for popularizing science
  • Will know how to increase the audience reach for scientific information through social media
  • Will know how to write interesting popular science texts
